Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego-US National Park

Cabrillo National Monument offers some of the most magnificent views of the San Diego skyline. It’s a place where you can explore both the natural and cultural history of San Diego—at your own pace. Whether you want an interactive experience at the museum or a relaxed day soaking in ocean views, Cabrillo truly has something for everyone.

As a local who grew up in San Diego, this spot holds a special place in my heart. My family visited often, and it was also a favorite destination for school field trips. Even now, as an adult, I still consider this national park a Point Loma gem and one of the most beautiful ways to spend a day outdoors. It’s easily one of the best viewpoint locations in the city.

If you have the time, I highly recommend visiting this city treasure.

Location:
Cabrillo National Monument

1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive
San Diego, CA

Hours:
Open daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
(Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas)
There is a small entrance fee to access the park.

For some of the best views, take the self-guided two-mile walk that begins near the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The trail winds through a coastal sage scrub forest and offers stunning views of San Diego Harbor and the city skyline. It’s especially beautiful in the spring when wildflowers are in bloom.

Just south of the lighthouse is the Whale Overlook, which provides sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the New Point Loma Lighthouse. Gray whales are often spotted here during migration season in January and February.

On the west side of the park—accessible by car only—you’ll find a breathtaking coastal area. Birdwatching is popular year-round, and during extreme low tides, visitors can explore the intertidal zone filled with marine life.

The historic lighthouse, restored to reflect life in the 1880s, offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the lightkeepers and their families. Next door, the Assistant Keeper’s Quarters features an interactive exhibit sharing the story of the lighthouse and its role in San Diego’s history.

On a clear day, the views are unbeatable—you can see the San Diego skyline, navy ships, dolphins, whales, and the endless Pacific Ocean.

Keep reading for my lunch recommendation nearby!

This picturesque lighthouse was restored in the 1880's.
Representing life as it was for the light keepers and their families. Adjacent to the lighthouse is the assistance keepers interactive exhibit telling the story of the Lighthouse.

After spending the morning at the National park worked up an appetite. We headed over to the Point Loma Seafood for lunch. They have panoramic views of San Diego Bay and Downtown San Diego. You can order a delish fresh fish daily.
What to Order?
I ordered shrimp and fries, and coleslaw
Husband ordered the Combo-
2 piece Cod, 2 Shrimp and 1 crab cake with
Coleslaw fries and tarter sauce.
And of course two cold beers!
Everything is delicious and the fish is fresh.

After lunch we walked around the marina and ended the day with an ice cream
A sweet way to end our day in San Diego 🍦💕
