Underground Colosseum Tour and lunch

Underground Tour of the Colosseum – Our Experience

Imagine standing in the exact place where gladiators and wild beasts once fought for their lives.

On the underground tour, you’re fully immersed in stories that date back over 2,000 years. You get an up-close and personal look at what it was like to walk on the arena floor, where both man and beast battled to the death. It’s truly a surreal experience standing in a place filled with so much history.

With your ticket, you also receive access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill — and you should absolutely take advantage of both. Each site adds even more depth to your understanding of ancient Rome.

People from all over the world flock to this historic landmark. With that being said, pack your patience! The Colosseum and surrounding monuments are always busy with tours and tourists.

This post shares our personal experience from the day. I won’t give away all the details because I want to leave a few surprises for you.

Trust me — when in Rome, take the tour… or at the very least, make your way to the Colosseum to experience this incredible piece of history for yourself.

Tour Tips 🗺️

  • Book your tickets well in advance. They sell out quickly, especially during the summer months.

  • Bring water. Liquids are allowed inside as long as they’re in plastic containers. There are also water kiosks across the street from the Colosseum.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking for over two hours.

  • Bring your passport or ID. They check to make sure the name on your ticket matches your identification.

  • Small bags are allowed.

  • Bring a phone charger. You’ll definitely want your phone ready for photos and videos!

After our tour we headed over to one of our favorite Pizza restaurants in Rome. We walked over to Trastevere
to eat at Pizza Re. They have a large variety of pizzas and traditional Italian dishes that are made fresh to order.
Save time to walk around the eclectic neighborhood of Trastevere, they have cute boutique shops, cafes and bars. In the evening it's a nice place to go for an apertivo and stroll around the alleyways.

Ciao from Rome  🇮🇹 🍕 🛵
