Hôtel de Glace is located about 25 minutes outside of Old Quebec City, and the drive alone is beautiful. When we arrived, it was freezing—about 5 degrees Fahrenheit—and snowing heavily. The air was crisp, the kind that wakes up every sense. We were bundled up and buzzing with excitement to finally see what this famous ice hotel was all about.
Hôtel de Glace has been on my bucket list for years. Honestly, I never thought I would actually go. It was one of those dream places I’d admire from afar—something I’d see in photos and imagine, but never really expect to experience. And yet, there I was with my husband, all bundled up, about to explore this incredible, one-of-a-kind hotel.
It was just as magical as it looks on Instagram—if not more. Hôtel de Glace is the only ice hotel of its kind in North America, and its theme changes every year. This year’s theme was The Gardens, and we were completely awestruck by the intricate hotel rooms and beautifully designed themed suites. There’s even an Ice Chapel, which felt unbelievably dreamy and romantic.
We warmed up with a few cocktails (served in ice glasses, of course) and ended our visit with a stop at the Sugar Shack. Warm Canadian maple syrup drizzled over ice, rolled up on a stick—simple, delicious, and unforgettable.
Side note: We didn’t spend the night at Hôtel de Glace. We were a little too chicken to brave the cold! That said, I’ve heard amazing things from those who do. The hotel offers hot pools and saunas to warm up before bedtime, and many guests say it’s the best night’s sleep they’ve ever had—thanks to the fresh oxygen, deep quiet, and serene snow-covered surroundings.
Maybe one day we’ll be brave enough to try it… but for now, the experience itself was absolutely unforgettable.
